WELCOME, WANJOO

This once-in-a-generation project is transforming WA’s favourite port city into a vibrant commercial and community hub.

The Kings Square Renewal Project has been the largest public-private infrastructure project in Fremantle’s history. A joint initiative between Sirona Capital and the City of Fremantle, the $270 million Kings Square Renewal Project is renewing the entire precinct by redeveloping the buildings and rejuvenating public spaces that surround the square.

The transformation of the CBD has also been the catalyst for real and emerging upswing in confidence in the Port City and has been the catalyst for a host of other private investment. At a time when the effects of COVID-19 are being felt everywhere, Freo is on the up!

The renewal of our city centre also presented a great opportunity to consider a new name for our town square, and in July 2021 Kings Square was officially renamed Walyalup Koort following an extensive 18-month community engagement process. Walyalup is the Nyoongar name for an area that includes Fremantle and Koort means heart. The new name reflects the contribution to this land by the Whadjuk Nyoongar people and is a key milestone in our ongoing journey of reconciliation and recognition.

Now that Kings Square Renewal Project is complete, Walyalup Koort is the place to have fun, meet, play, dine and drink, shop, learn and relax.
