Walyalup Civic Centre update

26th November 2021

The Walyalup Civic Centre is currently closed because of a fire pump failure that occurred on Thursday 25 November.

The issue resulted from a valve failure in the fire pump plant room in the basement, which caused the fire pump room to flood. Water damage was contained to the fire pump room, the control panels and a few square metres of carpet tiles to the rear area of the library.

There is no other damage to the building or library areas. Books, computers, furniture and other equipment in the library are all fine.

We have now pumped the water away and are drying the subfloor areas. It will then take a few days to test the electrical and IT systems and replace the faulty valve.

However, it may take a little longer to confirm the condition of the two fire pumps in the plant room and their controls, and if any repairs or replacement parts are required.

For public safety, we won’t reopen the building until we have suitable fire management arrangements in place. We are working with FESA and the building’s certifiers and are hopeful this can be addressed quickly.

The City of Fremantle Customer Service Centre is operating again at Fremantle Oval (70 Parry Street, Fremantle). You can also still lodge requests using the customer service portal or phone 1300 MY FREO (1300 693 736) as usual.

Check the City's Facebook page for the latest reopening updates.

We apologise for the disruption and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
